Majora's Mask 3DS Player Performs Star Wars' Cantina Band Theme In-Game
A gamer was recently able to play the iconic Cantina theme from Star Wars using virtual instruments in the Nintendo 3DS version of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. The iconic chapter in the Zelda franchise has been the inspiration behind countless pieces of fan art and side projects over the years, with one recent example being a 3D model of the Majora's Mask antagonist Skull Kid.
Often considered to be one of the strangest and most original entries in the Zelda series, Majora's Mask certainly has no shortage of fans and admirers. The game begins in usual Zelda fashion, with players filling the shoes of silent protagonist Link as he wanders through a forest. Misfortune befalls him soon enough, though, as he is turned into a Deku with the magical Deku Mask. There are several masks that players can discover throughout the game that change up gameplay, but only the Deku Mask, Goron Mask, Zora Mask, and Fierce Deity Mask will transform Link. Those first three masks will give Link access to the unique instruments of the pipes, the guitar, and the bongo drums, which players can use to play certain magical songs. The 3DS version of the game breathed new life into these instruments, as shown by one fan who recreated Toto's Africa with Majora's Mask instruments.
Echoing that creation, one Reddit user by the name of Naaaayte managed to play a similarly iconic tune through the 3Ds version of the game. A video that Naaaayte shared is an edit of four separate clips, each with Naaaayte playing a different part of the song. When mashed together, it is almost a perfect recreation of the Cantina song from Star Wars, with the Deku's pipes forming the main body of the song and the Zora's guitar laying down a smooth string backing.
Even for those unfamiliar or not particularly fond of Majora's Mask, this accomplishment will probably leave a lasting impression. The deft use of the 3DS's instrument mechanics, along with Naaaayte's simple but effective editing, makes this clip a sight to behold. Majora's Mask has come to the Switch as part of Nintendo Switch online, so it's possible that additional series veterans and first-time players will make their own cool tunes through the game as it gets in the hands of more players.
While the game's developers may not have imagined that fans would be using Majora's Mask to recreate Star Wars music decades after its release, it is definitely a welcome outcome of the game's community for many. Aside from being impressive and entertaining on its own, it's something of a testament to just how impactful the game's legacy has been, that players are still avidly engaging with it today. Hopefully, this will not be the last of these Majora's Mask music edits.
