A kind stranger paid for my £35 petrol bill when I lost my bank card…he settled up and didn’t ask for a penny back
A MAN has told how a kind stranger paid his £35 petrol bill when he lost his bank card – and didn’t ask for a penny back.
Keith Caley, 79, found himself in a tough spot when he filled up his car at the JET garage in Stokesley, North Yorkshire.
When the pensioner got to the counter he realised he had lost his bank card and was unable to pay his bill.
But luckily, a good samaritan came to his rescue and decided to pay for Keith’s fuel.
Keith told Teeside Live: “The chap was stood behind me. He said ‘go and check your car to see if you’ve left it there’. There was no sign of it.
“I asked how much the petrol was, this chap behind me had been standing there a couple of minutes while I went and checked.
“He just said ‘it’s alright pal, I’ll pay for it’. It was brilliant. I couldn’t believe it.”
Keith told the mystery man that he only lived at the end of town, and could nip home to get money to pay him back.

Keith said: “He said ‘it’s okay’. He never thought any more about it, you’d think he did it every day.
“It was a brilliant gesture, really amazing that somebody could be so kind-hearted. I’d never seen him before in my life.
“I don’t know whether he was a local or somebody passing through. Brilliant fella, to do this.”
Keith then retraced his steps and luckily managed to find the missing card.
Now, to pass on the kindness, Keith and his sister Audrey have been sending a collection of essentials to a Ukraine appeal.
Keith said: “It’s the least we can do. There is a lot of goodness going around at the minute.
“It might trigger a few more people to do the same – I hope it does.”
Audrey believes the man must have stepped in when he saw how distraught her brother was.
She said: “Keith was so thrilled, you don’t expect anybody to be so kind. We want to let him know how grateful we were.
“It gave Keith a real buzz, that lovely young man, I just hope somebody is as kind and sweet to him.
“We said we would pass it on – what goes around comes around. There are more kind people in the world than bad.”
