Kamala Harris defended late-term abortions Friday when she criticized Florida for passing a law to protect thousands of unborn babies from abortion every year.
Both Harris and Joe Biden issued statements condemning the new 15-week abortion ban in Florida, claiming the killing of unborn babies in abortions is a woman’s “right.”
“This bill is extreme by any standard,” Harris said. “The right of women to make decisions about their own bodies is non-negotiable.”
The legislation, which Gov. Ron DeSantis said he will sign, bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions if the mother’s life is at risk or the unborn baby has a fatal disorder. It also includes measures to reduce infant mortality and a requirement that abortion facilities report suspected human trafficking cases to the state.

Currently, abortions are legal up to 24 weeks in Florida, even though premature babies now are surviving as early as 21 weeks.
Harris argued against changing the law, claiming late-term abortions on viable unborn babies are “crucial reproductive health care.”
“It will block access to crucial reproductive health care for Floridians, with a particular impact on low-income communities, communities of color, and rural communities,” she said.
However, thousands of doctors confirm that late-term abortions never are necessary to save the mother’s life. If a mother is suffering a life-threatening ailment that requires the removal of her baby, then doctors would deliver the baby instead of take extra time to kill the unborn baby first.
Despite the evidence to the contrary, Harris doubled down on her claim that aborting unborn babies is health care.
“Unconstitutional abortion bans and other bills that will dramatically reduce access to reproductive care are pending in state legislatures across the country,” Harris said. “These efforts only strengthen our resolve: The Biden-Harris Administration will continue to do everything in our power to protect access to healthcare and defend a woman’s right to make decisions about her body and determine her future.”
Harris’s position is extreme and out of touch. Most countries in the world prohibit or strictly limit abortions after 15 weeks, including most European countries. The United States is one of only a few countries in the world that allows elective abortions after 20 weeks.
What’s more, polls consistently show a strong majority of Americans support legal protections for unborn babies, especially after the first trimester.
A recent Associated Press poll found a strong majority of Americans believe abortions should be illegal in the second and third trimesters. According to the poll, 65 percent said most or all second-trimester abortions should be illegal, and 80 percent said most or all abortions should be illegal in the third trimester. Another poll from Marist in January found that 71 percent of Americans want abortions to be illegal or more strongly limited.
On Friday, DeSantis confirmed he will sign the pro-life bill into law.
“I think that protections are warranted, and I think that we’ll be able to sign that in short order,” the Florida governor said. “These are protections for babies that have a heartbeat, that feel pain.”
Right now, Roe v. Wade forces states to legalize the killing of unborn babies in abortions up to viability. However, the Supreme Court is re-considering this precedent in a case about a 15-week abortion ban in Mississippi. A ruling is expected this summer, and because of the conservative majority on the high court, many hope the justices will uphold the law and allow states to protect unborn babies again.
