On March 4, at least 56 people were killed and around 200 others were wounded when a suicide attacker of ISIS blew himself up inside a Shi’ite Muslim mosque during Friday prayers in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar.
Senior Pakistani police official Haroon Rasheed told Reuters that the attacker, who arrived near the mosque on a motorcycle, clashed with policemen before forcing his way into Kucha Risaldar mosque where he detonated his explosive vest.
“The armed man entered the mosque and started firing on the worshippers and finally blew himself up,” Rasheed said.
ISIS confirmed its responsibility for the attack in a statement that was released by the Amaq news agency. The terrorist group identified the suicide attacker as “Jilbib al-Kabliu”. The attacker’s nom de guerre “al-Kabuli” suggests that he is originally from the city of Kabul, the capital of neighboring Afghanistan.

This was the deadliest attack in Pakistan since last August. Thousands have been killed, many of them from the Shia minority, in sectarian violence in Pakistan, according to Human Rights Watch and other monitoring groups.
Pakistan has experienced a serious increase in violence since the Taliban took over the rule in Afghanistan. Some radical groups like Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, known as the Pakistani Taliban, were emboldened by the Taliban victory, while others, like ISIS – Khorasan Province, took advantage from the chaos that followed the collapse of the Afghan government.
