Patrick Stewart shares an earnest tribute to co-star Whoopi Goldberg to celebrate her appearance on the Star Trek: Picard season 2 premiere.
Star Trek: Picard star Patrick Stewart has penned a lovely tribute to his longtime co-star Whoopi Goldberg. Picard is a decades-later follow-up to Star Trek: The Next Generation, which went off the air in 1994. It details the adventures of the stalwart Captain (now Admiral) Jean-Luc Picard in his old age, joined by a cast of familiar faces and new friends played by Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Evan Evagora, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Jeri Ryan, Orla Brady, Brent Spiner (in a non-Data role) and John de Lancie returning as Q for season 2.
Another TNG character who is making a return appearance in the series is Whoopi Goldberg's iconic Guinan. Guinan is the bartender at the Ten-Forward Lounge on Picard's most well-known starship, the USS Enterprise-D. The centuries-old humanoid alien appeared in 28 episodes of the original series as well as 2 of the theatrical films featuring the TNG cast. Although it's unknown how many episodes she will be featured in throughout the season, she reunited with Captain Picard in the first episode of Star Trek: Picard season 2, which just premiered on Paramount+.
On his Instagram, Patrick Stewart shared a post celebrating both the Picard season 2 premiere and Whoopi Goldberg returning to the Star Trek universe after all this time. In addition to sharing an exclusive clip from the new episode, featuring Picard's first reunion with Guinan after many years, he shared a warm story about his joy at working together again. He says that "I still remember the day Whoopi Goldberg walked onto the set of Star Trek: The Next Generation. We were thrilled and felt so lucky to have her there. The feeling was the exact same when she joined us this season." Stewart also implores fans to "enjoy this scene" because "I certainly did." Check out the post below:

In addition to featuring the return of Q and Guinan, Star Trek: Picard season 2 is taking some major narrative swings. The central arc of the season will follow Picard and his crew being thrown back in time and arriving on planet Earth in the not-too-distant future year of 2024. The season is setting up an It's a Wonderful Life style tale where Picard might just get a chance to explore the road not taken.
Star Trek: Picard may not have been particularly well-received in its first season, but it's certainly pulling out all the stops to make up lost ground. Featuring Whoopi Goldberg's return to the Star Trek universe is just the first of what is certain to be many surprises this season. Across its ten episodes, Picard will have one more chance to prove that it can earn the already-renewed season 3 that's coming in 2023.
