SHERMAN OAKS — Survive and advance.
It’s a saying you hear a lot in March when the NCAA Tournament starts, but it applies in the CIF State tournament, too.
Notre Dame senior guard Ben Shtolzberg was clutch from the free throw line, going 10 for 10 in the fourth quarter to help the Knights edge St. Anthony 66-60 and stay alive in the Division I regional playoffs Thursday night.

Shtolzberg finished with 25 points, including 13 (of 14) free throws.
“I practice free throws at the end of every practice,” Shtolzberg said. “I’ve prepared for this.”
No. 3 Notre Dame (21-7) will travel to No. 2-seeded Crean Lutheran in the regional semifinal Saturday night.
Junior Dusty Stromer added 23 points in the win, and also was tasked with guarding St. Anthony’s 6-foot-7 forward Elijah Price, who finished with 21 points, but had to earn every basket. Senior point guard Jaayden Bush had 16 for the Saints (19-10).

Notre Dame endured a third quarter with no baskets and just five free throws until the two-minute mark. A Kendall Hailey layup finally broke the proverbial seal on the hoop, but St. Anthony carried a 48-46 lead into the final quarter.
Stromer had a thunderous two-handed jam in the fourth quarter that brought the rowdy home crowd to its feet to make it 51-50 with more than five minutes to play and never trailed the rest of the game.
Notre Dame’s last eight points were all on free throws.
Notre Dame earned its first-ever berth to the CIF Southern Section Open Division this season, an honorable accomplishment that only eight teams are awarded each year. But the Knights went 0-3 in pool play before having a long layoff until the state playoffs started.
Shtolzberg said the time off was good.
“We’ve re-grouped with good practices and a team outing,” said Shtolzberg, who mentioned the team did an Escape Room as one of its off-the-court team activities during the layoff.
“It was hard, and scary,” he said of the haunted themed Escape Room.
Dusty Stromer 3ball in transition. This one is getting chippy. Jaaylen Bush and Ben Shtolzberg have been chirping all game.
The togetherness showed Thursday night, and now the Knights are two wins away from a trip to Sacramento next weekend for a shot at the CIF State title.
“That’s the new goal,” said Shtolzberg, a Creighton commit.
