Luckily, the couple does end the night alone, enjoying each other's company as they begin their New Year.
When Ann loses her engagement ring, she frantically tries to find it. Though Don tries to reassure her that it will be okay and he can replace it, Ann is insistent on finding the one he gave her originally for its sentimental value. Ann thinks it's in the cheesecake at the Governor's house that she baked, and she and Don hurriedly race to find it before it's too late. It's no wonder audiences love this episode given the relatability of losing something incredibly important and the efforts involved to locate the item.
When Don goes out of town, Ann stays at his apartment while hers is being fixed due to termites. She's surprised to find another man there, a friend of Don's who's in town. She and Don's friend, Harry, do not hit things off right off the bat and Ann keeps insisting on him leaving.
The two have quite a time with one another and things get more complicated when Ann's father shows up. The episode was entertaining and certainly presented a challenge for Ann considering her dislike of one of Don's friends, but their interactions were certainly memorable.
When Ann's beloved Uncle Harry's trunk is delivered to her doorstep, her agent decides to take advantage of the fact that Harry was formerly a vaudeville star to write a story about Ann and garner some publicity. The publicity brings Milton Berle and Danny Thomas to her building, both wanting to buy Harry's trunk, having known him years before. Ann believes something valuable is in the trunk that they want, when the two are actually trying to help her out. They end up finding another way to help give Ann's career a boost by having her perform with them before several famous audience members. The episode is noteworthy for the kindness shown in actors helping other actors out, and for the notable guest stars Milton Berle and Danny Thomas, of course.
While out bowling with Don, Ann reads an article about a man who can bowl with his toes. She decides to give it a try, only for her toe to get stuck in the bowling ball! She and Don rush around New York City from the fire department to the emergency room, but their efforts are futile until Ann's toe can relax and the ball comes off itself. The thing is, she has a banquet to get to, and she doesn't want to attend with a bowling ball for a shoe. This episode was hilarious and definitely stood out for it given Ann's and Don's many efforts to remove the bowling ball, and of course, the fact that Ann got one stuck on her toe to begin with; it's certainly not something audiences see everyday!
Ann and Don head out of the city to Brewster, Ann's hometown. They stop for a picnic along the way, and from there, it's a series of unfortunate events, particularly for Don. Don had dressed nicely, wanting to impress Ann's parents, but arrives a mess after a bee sting, car trouble and other mishaps have decidedly made the impression for him.
The episode stands out for its comedy and definitely for its relatability in meeting a significant other's parents for the first time, but hopefully audiences don't have the terrible experiences Don endured!
Ann and Don get a crash course in running a restaurant, especially in the midst of a crisis when most of the staff comes down with a virus. Ann finds that owning a restaurant comes with a lot of responsibilities, and she and Don run around frantically trying to keep the restaurant going and fixing problems as they arise, as Ann doesn't want to interrupt her father's vacation. By the end, Don and Ann could use a vacation themselves, but they make everything work! Audiences love this episode given Ann and Don's efforts to keep the restaurant going, and they definitely appreciate Ann and Don's creativity and spur of the moment ideas.
Ann is working at a newsstand when she's offered the part in a commercial. She also meets Don, her future boyfriend. She and Don definitely don't hit it off right away, and things worsen when the two begin fighting over a desk they both want to buy. However, when the commercial calls for Ann to be kidnapped, Don think it's real and saves her, only for her to admonish him for potentially costing her the job. While it's a series of misadventures for the couple, the episode ends on a happy note as they begin their relationship, which is definitely what audiences loved about this episode.
Ann and Don get engaged on their four-year anniversary, and neither could be happier. Unfortunately, Ann's happy night is interrupted when she has to give her ring back to the man that Don bought it from, who needs it for his own fiancée. Ann frantically runs around trying to find a new one without telling Don and without knowing how much the ring costs, and manages to do so before he returns from his trip.
The episode is certainly beloved because of the fact that Don and Ann had taken the next step towards marriage and that the two could overcome anything, even a ring mishap!
While Ann's working on a commercial, she meets Rose, a singer who dubbed Ann's voice in the commercial. Ann is determined to help boost Rose's career, declaring that she's a wonderful singer that should be discovered. Don warns her against meddling, but Ann is set on making Rose a star. The thing is, Rose already has a higher calling as a nun. Rose was played by Marlo Thomas's real-life sister; the episode is noteworthy for the appearances of many Thomas family members, as well as the lesson Ann had to learn about meddling in other people's lives without their knowledge.
