Can Spurs Still Make The Top 4?
Having previously established themselves as Champions league regulars, Tottenham have once again dipped out of elite European competition. The past two seasons have seen Europa League and Europa Conference campaigns respectively, neither of which appear worthwhile endeavours for a club the size of Spurs particularly when you take the new stadium into consideration. I am sure they generate capital for the club, but ultimately these lesser competitions are just an unnecessary distraction from domestic trophies. Taking recent results into account, the current squad available to Antonio Conte as well as upcoming fixtures, is it still possible for Spurs to make the top 4 this term?
A recent run of three Premier League defeats left Tottenham’s Champions League hopes in tatters, but the subsequent victory over Manchester City has given Spurs fans a glimmer of hope. As things stand, there are five teams more fancied to fill the top four spots in the Premier League than Tottenham. Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea appear to have the top three positions sewn up, with Arsenal, Man Utd and Tottenham fighting it out for that all-important fourth position. Both Arsenal and Tottenham have games in hand on the sides around them, but it is Manchester United who already have the points in the bag. Depending upon results between now and then, Spurs could have a real opportunity to close the gap or even potentially overtake Man Utd in the Premier League table. Antonio Conte certainly won’t be under any pressure to deliver a top four finish this term, but he will no doubt be keen for his side to be involved in the Champions League next season. I for one can’t wait to see how all this unfolds.
