Production has begun on the film adaptation of Stephen King's The Boogeyman. The short story was originally published in the magazine Cavalier in 1973, then later in 1978 in a collection by King entitled Night Shift. Over the years, it has been adapted in many forms, including short films in 1982 and 2010, and has also been performed as a full length play at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. 20th Century Studios had been in talks to produce a The Boogeyman adaptation since 2018, though for a while it looked like it perhaps got lost in the shuffle after Fox was acquired by Disney.
However, nearly four years later, it has been confirmed that their production will be going ahead. A press release from 20th Century Studios announces that production on The Boogeyman has commenced this week in New Orleans. According to the release, the story will follow a 16-year-old girl and her younger sister who are targeted by a supernatural being after their psychologist father has an encounter with one of his desperate patients in their house. The film is to be helmed by Host's Rob Savage, and The Boogeyman cast includes Chris Messina, Sophie Thatcher, Vivien Lyra Blair, David Dastmalchian, Marin Ireland, and Madison Hu.
While no specific release date has been set, it has been announced that The Boogeyman will release on streaming in 2023. The film will be marketed as an Original on all of Disney's direct-to-consumer platforms, specifically on Hulu in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America, and on Disney+ under the Star banner everywhere else. Many fans have been waiting since 2018 to find out if they will finally get to see a full-length adaptation of King's novella, and the good news is that, in 2023, The Boogeyman is coming for them.
