Antonio Conte’s Sky Italia Interview

A recent interview with Sky Italia suggested that Antonio Conte was particularly unhappy with the club’s transfer strategy. As a result of the fallout from this, the Spurs managers has suggested that the club no longer want him to speak to the Italian media. Conte has also stated that a number of the points he was attempting to make during the interview have been lost in translation. Here are the highlights of what was discussed.

“What happened in January was not easy,” Conte is quoted as saying by Football Italia. “We lost four players in January. Four important players for Tottenham, and we brought in only two.

“So even just in terms of numbers, rather than reinforce the squad, we on paper weakened it. Bentancur and Kulusevski are ideal prospects for Tottenham, because Tottenham are seeking young players they can develop and grow, not players who are ready. That is the issue.

“This is the vision and the philosophy of the club. It is inevitable that if you want to grow quicker and if you want to be competitive more rapidly, you need players with a lot of experience, because they also raise the experience level of the overall team.

“But I repeat, I have realised now that this is the vision of the club.”

This interview was obviously an opportunity to get his point across to Daniel Levy without having a direct conversation with the chairman. Possibly not the best approach as far as I am concerned, but I am sure the manager will have had his reasons for going down this road. The players that left which Conte was referring to are Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele, Bryan Gil and Giovani Lo Celso.

You can see what Conte is getting in at terms of the strategy which has been employed at Tottenham for some time now. Daniel Levy will rarely buy players who are the finished article. He likes to bring in prospects who have potential at a young age and with a sell on value at the end of their tenure. It will be interesting to see how the relationship between manager and chairman develops from here.
