The Gilded Age, the new period drama from the Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes, has been renewed by HBO for a season 2 after a successful debut.
HBO has officially renewed its new period drama The Gilded Age for season 2. The drama series comes from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes and debuted on January 24. Set during the titular American Gilded Age of the late-1800s, the show follows Marian, daughter to a conservative, rural family, as she infiltrates her wealthy aunts’ clans of railway tycoons in New York City. She soon becomes embroiled in warring parties, social conflict and a battle of old-vs-new ideologies. The gripping period piece has a stacked cast of talent, from Carrie Coon to Christine Baranski.
Now, HBO officially announces that the fresh-faced series will be renewed for season 2, just weeks into its debut run. Executive VP of HBO Programming Francesca Orsi praised the show’s creator and confirmed the network is excited to continue the show's journey. Read her full quote below:
Julian Fellowes and the entire Gilded Age family have thoroughly captivated us with their tale of late 19th century New York City extravagance. Along with our partners at Universal Television, we couldn't be prouder to embark on a season two journey with this extraordinarily talented team.
The debut episode of the series, which aired in January, was HBO’s most successful premiere since 2019’s award-winning miniseries Chernobyl. Audiences have taken well to the new show with its intricate and entertaining cast of characters, so the news that the successful debutant will get another outing should be welcomed by fans. In the meantime, the season 1 is currently airing weekly on HBO, with the season 1 finale due to air March 21. The first few episodes of The Gilded Age are available to stream exclusively on HBO Max.
