A 16-year-old skier died after colliding with another teen at a competition Sunday at Palisades Tahoe.
Scott Lapp had reportedly just finished his run in the Tahoe Junior Freeride Series event at Palisades’ Alpine Meadows area. The crash happened around 2 p.m. near the bottom of the Yellow Run.
The other teen, who was also participating in the competition, suffered injuries that required hospitalization, Palisades Tahoe said.
Lapp lived in Tahoe City and was a sophomore at North Tahoe High School, a statement from the Tahoe Truckee school district said. He was on Palisades’ junior ski team.
Lapp had been the fifth of 31 skiers scheduled for the competition wave, in the division of 15- to 18-year-old male skiers.
In freeriding, skiers and snowboarders are judged on fluidity, technique and execution of maneuvers during a downhill run.
