Celebrated director Quentin Tarantino has talked at length about making his own Star Trek movie, and while he mostly writes his own movies, Jackie Brown was an adaptation of the novel Rum Punch. So it isn't completely out of the realm of possibility that he could direct a movie remake.
But the conversation gets interesting when discussing which movies he should actually remake. Whether it's because the original movie wasn't great, because Tarantino would have an interesting take on the material, or because the movie needs more pop culture references, Reddit wants him to remake these movies.
According to Kill Screen, Quentin Tarantino has absolutely no interest in video games. Even though there are a lot of parallels between his movies and the video games, and there are some incredibly written non-linear games (such as Deathloop) that he would love, for whatever reason, he'll never play them.
However, CoolHandSam claims that the director could make a great version of the action-horror Max Payne, which had a critically scathed movie adaptation in 2008. The Redditor notes that Tarantino's Max Payne could "have Django-style blood explosions," which was something that the games had in spades but was lacking in the 2008 movie.
Ishootthemoon wants to see the Pulp Fiction director remake The Pirates of the Caribbean, explaining that they've always "wanted a rated R pirate movie for a while." And while Captain Jack Sparrow feels like a PG-rated version of a Tarantino-written character, and even though a Pirates remake is in development, the idea of a Tarantino-helmed Pirates remake is unrealistic.
There's no more of a mismatched studio and director pairing than Disney and Tarantino. It'd be fantastic to see the filmmaker write and direct a pirate-based movie that's full of vulgar sea shanties, backstabbing, foul language, and all sorts of pirate shenanigans, but if that'll ever happen it'd be an original screenplay.
A deleted user makes an interesting point that other users are "taking a random movie and adding death and violence. it has to already be based around a violent idea for the remake to make any sense." The Redditor chooses The Great Escape for Tarantino to remake.
However, the movie is one of the greatest and most classic war films ever made, and the Redditor doesn't give much insight into why it needs to be remade. But, interestingly, there's already a connection between Tarantino and the 1963 movie. In Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Rick Dalton screen-tested for the role of Captain Virgil Hills, which was originally played by Steve McQueen.
Pollettuce makes the argument that Gladiator should be remade, arguing that the swords and sandals movie "could be made to fit his style easily and be even more amazing." But just as is the case with The Great Escape, Gladiator is already an incredible film and considered as one of the greatest cinematic epics of all time, so it's a wonder why the Redditor thinks it needs to be remade.
However, as Gladiator 2 is an unrealized Ridley Scott project and has been in development hell for years, Tarantino could serve as director for the sequel, even if the tone would be entirely different from the original.
Die Hard is such a classic action movie and was the most influential action film of the early 90s. However, for as great as the original is, its legacy has been tarnished by several of its sequels. Generally, the Die Hard movies have gotten worse. And that's why YankeeSniper57 believes Tarantino can reset the clock, arguing that "he can save the Die Hard Series."
It almost sounds like the Redditor is arguing more for a sequel than a remake, which is in no way a bad thing. And as the original movie had so many incredible one-liners, writing dialogue for John McClane would be like playing in a sandbox for Tarantino.
Baz Luhrman might not have the same amount of hype surrounding him as Quentin Tarantino does, but he is just as much of a cinematic auteur too. With movies like Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet, he is an expert in colorful musicals and postmodernism, and that's what made 2013's adaptation of The Great Gatsby so unique.
However, TRKillShot still thinks the movie should be remade, but they have an interesting reason. The Redditor posits that Tarantino could expand the story by "perhaps exploring Jay's illegal business that he hides."
The Men In Black series has had a troubled life in recent years. Men In Black 3 was hated by fans and critics, and Men In Black: International was just as hated and didn't even feature the beloved characters of the originals. The most exciting news about the franchise was the prospect of it crossing over with 21 Jump Street, which, of course, never got off the ground.
Fozzy0_0 thinks the best thing to do with the series is to give it to Tarantino to remake, and their argument as to why is because of a certain actor's loyalty to the director. The Redditor explains that "it would be awesome to have Samuel L. Jackson as agent J." And, similarly, Agent K could be played by one of the filmmaker's other frequent collaborators, such as Christoph Waltz or Kurt Russell.
Though the 2006 movie is a perfectly fine crime drama, Swissbliss would "like to see him do Blood Diamond." The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, who has worked with Tarantino twice. And while some believe that DiCaprio deserved an Academy Award for his performance as a South African mercenary, his accent caused a lot of secondhand embarrassment amongst viewers. So that alone is enough to warrant a remake.
Tarantino has never shied away from tackling racism in his movies with the likes of Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight. So it'd be fascinating to see what he'd do with the theme with more modern material.
The James Bond series technically gets rebooted every 20 years or so, and there are already plenty of filmmakers who should reboot James Bond. But though Hoodfx14 doesn't specifically want Tarantino to reboot the franchise with a new actor playing the titular character, they think that seeing him "remaking one of the James Bond movies would be epic."
That's a little vague, especially as each era of Bond has a totally different style from the last. But it doesn't matter whether it's a James Bond movie as silly as Moonraker or as serious as No Time To Die, any of them remade by Tarantino would be endlessly entertaining.
Hilariously, NickCrosby87 thinks outside the box, and they want to see the director remake the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Just imagine it. Turtles b****-slapping people with nunchucks." However, though it might sound ridiculous on paper, Tarantino writing and directing a TMNT movie could be the only way to bring the ridiculous concept to life.
Ninja mutants sitting around, eating pizza, and cracking jokes would see Tarantino in his element. And as he soaks up pop culture and film knowledge like a sponge, the director probably somehow knows about the series better than anybody else too.
