US unfreezes over $3.5 billion of Afghanistan’s assets, remaining may be paid to 9/11 victims

US president Joe Biden signed an executive order based on which Afghanistan’s over $3.5 billion got released for humanitarian purposes in Afghanistan while $3.5 billion will still be kept in the US banks until the final decision of the US courts about litigation made by victims of 9/11.

A number of families of the victims of the September 11, 2001 attack on the Twin Towers in New York have made lawsuits in Federal courts pleading for Afghanistan’s assets to be paid for them.

A press release about the executive order of the White House reads that the unfrozen $3.5 billion will be given to the Afghan people in a manner that does not get in the hands of the Taliban and other elements.

About the destiny of the $3.5 billion that is still frozen, Joe Biden announced a national emergency situation and Congress has also been informed.

The US president has directed US relevant administrations to transfer the frozen funds to an exclusive bank account in the Central bank of New York and wait until the final decision of Federal courts regarding the lawsuits of the 9/11 victims.

The spokesperson of the Taliban’s political office in Doha Naeem Wardak reacted to the decision by the US and said the country stole the money of Afghan people.

Naeem Wardak in a Twitter post said that victory and defeat are usual in the history of humanity but the biggest and most humiliating defeat is a combination of both military and ethical.

Afghanistan’s nearly $10 billion were frozen from which only $7 billion were frozen in the US banks.
