Joe Biden sends 3,000 more troops to Poland as US believes Russia may invade Ukraine at ‘any time’
The US is sending an additional 3,000 troops to Poland, where 1,700 combat troops have assembled in the case of Russia invading Ukraine, according to a senior defense official.
The additional soldiers will depart from Fort Bragg, North Carolina over the next few days, and arrive in Poland early next week. They are the remaining elements of an infantry brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division, the Associated Press reported.
The news comes shortly after Jake Sullivan, President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, issued a public warning for all American citizens in Ukraine to leave the country as soon as possible.
In his warning, Sullivan said Russian President Vladimir Putin could give the order to launch an invasion of Ukraine any day now.
In addition to the US troops deploying to Poland, about 1,000 U.S. soldiers based in Germany are shifting to Romania in a similar mission of reassurance to a NATO ally.
The American troops are to train with host-nation forces, and will not enter Ukraine under any circumstances.
The US already has about 80,000 troops throughout different parts of Europe at permanent stations.
