Chris Pine To Make Directorial Debut With New Mystery-Comedy Movie
Chris Pine is stepping into the director's chair with his first feature Poolman, a mystery-comedy movie. Pine made his feature film debut way back in 2004 with The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and has since gone on to portray a string of iconic characters. These have included Captain Kirk in the most recent theatrical Star Trek releases, and Steve Trevor in both Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984. Pine went on to cross into the producing world in 2019 with the TV show I Am The Night, which he also starred in.
Now, Deadline reports that Pine is set to star and direct in the new mystery-comedy Poolman. Pine is to play Darren Barrenman, the titular poolman, who cares for the pools of the Tahitian Tiki apartments in Los Angelos. He will be joined by actors Danny DeVito and Annette Bening, who are neighbors to Pine's character. The star is producing Poolman alongside his former Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, as well as Stacey Sher and Ian Gotler.
It seems Pine is diving in fully on this project, as he is also co-writing the picture with Gotler as well. Poolman is set to see Pine's character uncover a huge water scandal that rivals the classic Los Angelos mystery film Chinatown. The mystery genre has risen in prominence in the last few years, with the popularity of Knives Out, Kenneth Branagh's new take on Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express and the upcoming Death on the Nile, and even the Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston-led Murder Mystery. Given this, Poolman should excite those who are enjoying the genre's resurgence, and will no doubt be excited to see what Pine will bring to the genre with Poolman as a first-time director. Currently, the film is hoping for production to start in June of 2022, possibly leaving little time before Pine's directorial debut is available for all to see.
