Ralf Rangnick provides fresh update on five Man Utd stars, duo ruled out

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has provided an update on five players ahead of Tuesday’s Premier League clash at Burnley.

The Red Devils returned from the winter break with a poor showing in the FA Cup fourth round. Middlesbrough registered a shock win on penalties at Old Trafford.

Rangnick will be eyeing a stronger response at Turf Moor tomorrow, but ahead of the game, he has fresh concerns to deal with Alex Telles and Fred sidelined due to coronavirus.

He told Manutd.com: “Alex Telles already missed the cup game because he tested COVID positive last week and, unfortunately, the same thing happened today with Fred.”

Meanwhile, the German did not provide any update on Victor Lindelof (illness) and Eric Bailly (ankle injury) who missed the Boro game, but he has confirmed the availability of three players.

Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard were offered time away last week, but Rangnick has confirmed that both players would be available to face the Clarets alongside Raphael Varane.

Varane was substituted at the end of normal time on Friday, but it appears it was more of a precaution due to his recent injury troubles. He looks set to partner Harry Maguire in central defence.

United are currently on a two-match winning league streak, but they were not particularly convincing against West Ham United last month, and needed a dramatic last-minute winner.

They could not capitalise on that momentum against Boro last week where the finishing was of poor quality. Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford all missed clear-cut scoring chances.

The attacking players were a big let-down, and it remains to be seen whether there is a strong response. It may not be easy at Turf Moor where Burnley generally make themselves difficult to beat.

They have shown good defensive resolve lately with back-to-back clean sheets, but United will need to be wary of the aerial threat of their new winter signing Wout Weghorst.

Hence, it won’t be a straightforward contest tomorrow. United have an excellent chance to extend their one-point lead for the fourth spot, but will need to work hard for a positive result.
