Marvel's Spider-Man 2 could bring back one of Marvel Comics' most popular team-ups by introducing Deadpool into Insomniac's universe. Insomniac's Spider-Man games are beloved for many reasons, one of the chief ones being their excellent reimaginings of classic Marvel characters. While Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will undoubtedly introduce new heroes and villains not seen in the first game, one of the most intriguing possibilities would be Deadpool. While not typically a character that falls under the banner of Spider-Man heroes and villains, Deadpool and Spidey have had several high-profile team-ups in Marvel Comics that have led to them becoming somewhat of an iconic duo. Deadpool's introduction into Insomniac's Marvel universe (which will also include the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine) could bring some unique aspects to the game that could only accompany a character like Deadpool.
While some have argued that the perfect Marvel crossover character that could appear in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is Daredevil, Deadpool might be the more interesting choice. Spider-Man and Deadpool have had a prolific history together in Marvel Comics, with Spidey first meeting the Merc with a Mouth back in 2006's Cable & Deadpool #24, where the two were at odds and battled it out. Since then, the two have become friends (though Deadpool has revealed that his feelings are more than platonic), and have teamed up in a number of issues, and eventually getting their own comic series, Spider-Man/Deadpool, from 2016 to 2019. The two feature a compelling dynamic, with Deadpool showing an undying love and admiration for the legendary web-slinger, while Spider-Man has been more hesitant to support the wise-cracking antihero.
Deadpool's introduction into Insomniac's Marvel video-game universe would not only make for an interesting plotline in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, but it could also open the possibility of introducing another popular team-up, Wolverine and Deadpool, in the upcoming game Marvel's Wolverine, which shares a universe with Insomniac's other games. A character like Deadpool, who has been linked with a number of interesting Marvel heroes and teams, could end up being a fantastic link between games if Insomniac chooses to extend its Marvel universe beyond just Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Wolverine. Deadpool, who regularly works as a mercenary for hire, could work his way into just about any Marvel storyline, and bring some much-needed comic relief to the publisher's more serious tales.
Deadpool could work his way into Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in a number of ways, though one of the most obvious would be through his work a mercenary. Perhaps he could be hunting a villain that Spider-Man is already working to defeat, or maybe he just wants to spend some quality time with his old friend. While a side story featuring Deadpool could work in the main game, it could also be the focus of a themed DLC pack, like Marvel's Spider-Man's Black Cat DLC. A DLC storyline featuring Deadpool could not only give the character the spotlight he deserves, but also allow the story to utilize some of Wade Wilson's more interesting stylistic elements, such as his inclination for breaking the 4th wall, which could be used to poke fun at some of the gameplay or game structure elements.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 could also be a great chance to bring veteran Deadpool voice actor Nolan North back as the popular antihero. North last portrayed the character in the mobile title Marvel Future Revolution, though he has also voiced the character in several high-profile Marvel titles like the Marvel Ultimate Alliance and mutant-based X-Men Legends games, as well as the character's solo game, Deadpool, in 2013. Whether it features North as the character or a different voice actor, an appearance by Deadpool in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 could not only make for an exciting team-up between him and Spider-Man, but also spice up the game's storyline with the character's signature style and humor.
