Captain Marvel 2 Must Explain Guardians Of The Galaxy's Kree Difference
Marvel must explain a Guardians of the Galaxy Kree difference by using flashbacks in The Marvels. It was at the end of Carol Danvers' first Marvel Cinematic Universe solo movie that audiences saw Brie Larson's superhero make a fairly big threat. Carol sent Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) back to the Kree home planet of Hala with a warning: she'd return soon to deal with the Kree and Super Intelligence's lies. However, that created some confusion, as the alien race had a different portrayal in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Carol Danvers' MCU introduction might have come during Phase 3, but Captain Marvel's 1995 setting meant it served as a prequel to almost every other Marvel movie. This includes predating the events of Guardians of the Galaxy by nearly two decades. James Gunn's movie originally brought the Kree alien race to the MCU, where Ronan the Accuser led a sect of Kree who wanted to return to power. The movie explains that the Kree are no longer at the center of massive cosmic wars, as they've elected to sign a peace treaty with the Nova Corps instead. Captain Marvel's ending means there is a huge gap in their story that needs to be addressed in The Marvels.
The difference in the Kree's MCU portrayals between Captain Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy is quite staggering. At this stage, Captain Marvel 2 has become the property that needs to explain why this is the case. There are rumors that Jude Law returned to take part in The Marvels' filming, which could suggest the MCU does plan on explaining Carol's Kree threat. Her sequel is the best place to do just that, as Captain Marvel's ending is where audiences last saw Marvel tease Carol's conflict with the Kree continuing. The aliens' standing in the cosmos by the time Guardians of the Galaxy takes place suggests this happens well before The Marvels too.
It is confirmed that The Marvels takes place predominantly in the modern day of the MCU, as Carol is joined in the sequel by adult Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) after WandaVision and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) after Ms. Marvel. However, the movie can still implement flashbacks to explain Guardians of the Galaxy's Kree difference. This wouldn't need to be a massive part of Captain Marvel 2 necessarily, but it would give Marvel Studios the chance to fill in a massive gap and answer one of the lingering questions from Captain Marvel's ending.
There is also the opportunity for Marvel to use Carol's Kree threat as an inciting incident for The Marvels' story. Captain Marvel returning to Hala and bringing an end to the Kree's warring ways could've opened the door for another cosmic threat to rise to power. Whether that becomes the Shi'ar, Skrulls, or Brood, Captain Marvel 2 could see Carol battle a new alien empire she unintentionally helped create. Similarly, it is possible Carol didn't truly change the Kree and they only became peaceful for Guardians of the Galaxy to lay low as they plot their next scheme. Either way, The Marvels must explain why the Kree changed so much after Captain Marvel.
