‘I am told’ – Journalist on Conte’s alleged plans for Dele had he stayed at Spurs

Duncan Castles has claimed Dele Alli was not going to be in Antonio Conte’s plans at Tottenham, even if he had remained at the club. 

Tottenham were said to be open to offloading Alli alongside midfielder Tanguy Ndombele in January with Conte also urging the club to dip into the transfer market (The Athletic). 

In a deadline day exodus at Tottenham, Dele was one of four outgoings as he secured a permanent switch to Everton on a two-and-a-half-year contract. 

Having started the campaign in good form under Nuno Espirito Santo, the 25-year-old failed to replicate this under Conte, only starting two Premier League games under the Italian (Transfermarkt). 

However, Alli’s Spurs career, which spanned seven years, was apparently approaching an end even before his exit to Everton according to Castles, who has revealed Conte was not intending on using him anymore going forward. 

Speaking on The Transfer Window podcast (03/02/22) Castles said: “They let all of those players go out on loan, and they also let Dele Alli join Everton on an initial free transfer with payments that can be triggered. 

“Getting rid of Alli was a necessary move, I am told that Antonio Conte would not have used him again.

“He wanted him out as an absolute priority, and when you look at [Mauricio] Pochettino, [Jose] Mourinho, Nuno [Espirito Santo] and Conte having problems with Dele Alli, there’s one common denominator.”

Spurs Web Opinion 

Alli needed a fresh change considering his career has stagnated at Tottenham and it was evident that Conte did plan to use him much more. If he managed to perform well for Everton, he will bag Spurs a nice amount of money that they missed out on a couple of seasons ago.
