‘I remain very interested’ – Manager still wants to sign Spurs player this summer
Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has admitted that he remains interested in signing Steven Bergwijn and refused to rule out his side making another approach for the Tottenham winger in the summer.
Bergwijn was linked with a move away from Spurs throughout the January transfer window, with the Eredivisie leaders tipped to be leading suitors as early as December (The Times).
De Telegraaf reported that Ajax submitted an 18 million (£15m) bid for the Netherlands international which was turned down by Spurs who were holding out for a larger sum.
However, the Dutch side’s attempts to sign Bergwijn were dealt a significant blow when the 24-year-old came off the bench to score two stoppage-time goals to complete a Spurs comeback against Leicester last month.
Despite Bergwijn being set to complete the current campaign in North London, Ajax boss ten Hag has maintained his interest in acquiring the winger and hints his side could return to the table with an offer in the summer.
Ten Hag said (via Vivandaag): “We would have gotten even better with him. Then we would have had another weapon. And the more weapons you have, the more successful you can be. He’d have been perfect for us.
“I remain very interested in a player with his profile. Another chance in the summer? Well, I don’t think he will be away from our radar.”

Bergwijn proved to Antonio Conte in recent weeks that he still deserves a place at Tottenham and can be a valuable player at his disposal.
The Leicester performance all but killed Ajax’s chances, despite their very strong interest, but they will inevitably return with a better offer come the end of the season.
