Son’s missus called us ‘abusers’ because we wouldn’t let him break lockdown rules
DEAR DEIDRE: MY son’s girlfriend told us we were mentally abusing our son because we refused to let him move to her parents’ house during lockdown.
They wanted to be together, but it was against the rules at the time, so we stood our ground.

Even though this was almost 20 months ago, my son’s girlfriend refuses to apologise for her actions.
We cannot accept her calling us abusers, but my son seems to think it will just go away.
I’m 48 and my wife’s 46. Our son and his girlfriend are both 18. We’ve tried talking to him about it and while he knows she’s in the wrong, he’s scared to push the situation.
She is celebrating her birthday soon and we have been invited to her party, but we don’t feel we can attend when she thinks we are the ones in the wrong.
We don’t want to lose our son, but this girl isn’t good for him. What can we do to open his eyes?

For your son’s sake, don’t hold a grudge against her. Accept she is your son’s choice and don’t criticise her.
