Pilots skillfully land planes as strong winds hit Birmingham Airport
It took a skilled pilot to land a plane in Birmingham on Saturday.
New footage shows hectic runway scenes amid strong winds at the city’s international airport.
Commercial aircraft are seen rocking back and forth as they are lowered to the ground.
‘Crabbing’ – a technique to land in extreme weather – was utilised multiple times to land safely.
It sees the pilot point the nose of the plane into the wind in order to keep it in control.
This leads the plane to fly sideways – said to be ‘similar to how a crab walks’.
Then, at the last second, the pilot turns the plane parallel with the runway to touch down straight onto the tarmac.
All planes appeared to land successfully – but the winds didn’t yield once they had touched down.
The video shows many of them rocking from side-to-side on the runway in what was surely an unpleasant experience for passengers onboard.
It comes after another pilot was forced to land a plane as Storm Barra hit the UK with up to 70mph winds.
A video shows the pilot trying to pull off a straight landing, as gusts keep turning the propeller-driven aircraft to the side.
