Carrie Johnson ‘wants Boris to throw in the towel’ after months of pressure

Carrie Johnson privately wants her husband to throw in the towel and walk away from his premiership, according to reports.

It is believed she has grown weary of the mounting pressure on her family brought on by the steady stream of allegations of Covid rule-breaking within Downing Street during lockdowns.

Despite repeated calls from both his own MPs and opposition members, the prime minister has insisted he is intent on continuing in post.

But The Sunday Times, citing three different sources, reported that Carrie would now rather he left – although she has not urged her husband to resign.

‘She was saying she had had enough a couple of weeks ago. She was telling friends the pressure on her was too much and she’d be happier if he left,’ a source said.

Mr Johnson is battling a number of allegations that gatherings inside No 10 repeatedly broke lockdown rules throughout 2020 and 2021; many of which are the subject of a Metropolitan Police investigation and a report by senior civil servant Sue Gray.

Outside of this alleged rule-breaking, he is also embroiled in controversy over the redecoration of his private flat above Number 11.

Many Conservative MPs blame Carrie for the saga including Johnson’s former chief advisor Dominic Cummings who left Downing Street following an internal power battle in November 2020.

Cummings has claimed Carrie had undue influence over the prime minister; an assertion repeated in extracts from a biography published this week.

The book, which has been bankrolled by Conservative peer Lord Ashcroft, outlines numerous alleged incidents in which Carrie used her position to influence the runnings of No 10.

It details how her relationship with Mr Johnson developed and claims she directed the hiring and firing of government staff, as well as getting Mr Johnson to offer coveted roles to her friends.

The book – whose initial publication date has been brought forward – has been rubbished by a devoted Cabinet minister as a ‘tissue of lies’ and a ‘sinister’ attempt at attacking the new mother-of-two.

Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries said: ‘This book is based on a tissue of lies provided by vengeful and mendacious men who were once employees in No 10 and is an insight into their warped minds. If it ever sees the light of day, it should be filed under fiction. 

‘Carrie had a baby only weeks ago and the obsessive way in which she is hounded is bordering on sinister.’
