Ex-Arsenal player backs ‘insane’ starlet Spurs sold to be future England international
Montpellier striker Stephy Mavididi has suggested former Tottenham winger Marcus Edwards has the ability to become a full international in the near future.
Edwards left Spurs as a highly-rated teenager having made one senior appearance to join Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes in 2019.
The 23-year-old impressed with Vitoria and currently has seven goals and three assists in 18 league appearances this term (Transfermarkt) which earned him a move reigning champions Sporting.
Edwards penned a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Leoes, who shelled out upwards of £6.8 million for the talented winger’s signature (A Bola).
Former Arsenal youngster Mavididi, who was Edwards’ teammate for an England youth team, claims the ex-Spurs player is one of the best players he has had the pleasure of playing alongside.
He also suggested Edwards could draw the attention of England manager Gareth Southgate regarding a senior call-up if his form continues on an upward trajectory.
Speaking to LiveScore, Mavididi said: “Marcus Edwards. He is insane. Every time someone asks me about this guy, for me, he is one of the top three players I have played with.
“Dribbling, agility, low centre of gravity, his change of direction. I haven’t seen anyone better than him with my own eyes. The guy is a joke, in the pockets and on the turn.
“He’s in Portugal right now. Last year I think he got seven or eight goals and a couple of assists, the year before that he was doing the same and this year he is also looking strong and on for the same numbers.
“He has proven that he can do it and play at a high level. I knew that already myself, but it is up to the world to see that.”

Edwards could end up being one that got away from Tottenham, but the club and himself probably new at the time that his future wouldn’t be in N17. It is great to see him making a decent career for himself, as many Spurs youth prospects end up getting lost further down the leagues.
