A FURIOUS driver has been slapped with a £60 fine after a council put up a “No Stopping” sign next to her car after she had already parked it.
The woman claimed she parked her car beside a tree outside a Sydney storage depot when she was handed the fine on Thursday.
She said when she left the vehicle, she was parked in a free parking area with no warning signs.
When she came back, she noticed a slip on her windscreen and a red sign suddenly beside her car that was kept in place with cable ties.
Blasting the council on Reddit, she wrote: “City of Ryde Council at their best… parked my car here earlier in the day, there was no sign… came back and found a ticket had been issued.”
A passer-by then told her he had reportedly seen a parking ranger pull a damaged sign “out of nearby bushes” moments before the fine was placed on her car.
Reddit users urged the woman to get a “‘signed statutory declaration from the eyewitness”.
Google Street View images from December fail to show a No Parking sign next to the tree.
A City of Ryde Council spokesperson said the woman’s infringement notice would be waived “due to the technicalities involved in the matter,” according to news.com.au.
They refuted the claim the parking inspector had placed the sign there with cable ties.
“The vehicle in question had parked in a No Stopping zone. At the time, one of three No Stopping signs had been displaced,” the spokesperson said.
“A member of the public refitted the No Stopping sign that had been displaced.
“While acknowledging the vehicle was parked illegally, council considered all the circumstances and plans to waive the infringement notice.”
Although the woman didn’t reveal the amount of her fine, New South Wales drivers who stop or park in a restricted parking area can be fined £60 ($116), according to the state’s roads and traffic authority.
