The Borei-A class (Project 955A) nuclear-powered submarine Knyaz Oleg has arrived at Russia’s Northern Fleet, according to Sevmash Shipyard.
“The Knyaz Oleg nuclear-powered submarine cruiser built at Sevmash (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) has arrived at the Northern Fleet. This is a temporary base for the Project Borei-A nuclear-powered submarine. The sub will operate in the Pacific Fleet,” the shipyard reported.
Upon arriving at the base, the submarine was inspected by the commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral Alexander Moiseev, and the Northern Fleet’s commission.
“The commander assessed the nuclear sub’s condition, noted the crew’s professionalism and their desire to learn to operate the nuclear-powered underwater cruiser as quickly as possible,” the officials revealed.
During its stay, the submarine’s crew will finish the training course and get ready for the mission and inter-fleet transit to the Pacific Fleet. The nuclear submarine will be based in Vilyuchinsk
Nuclear-powered submarine Knyaz Oleg was laid down in July 2014 and launched in July 2020. The vessel, which was designed by Rubin Central Design Bureau, joined the Russian Navy’s fleet in December last year.
A total of eight modernized Borei-A submarines are planned to be built at the Sevmash yard in Severodvinsk.
