As with any new multiplayer or co-op title, many are wondering if Dying Light 2 has crossplay for its four-player co-op story. Dying Light was a massive hit not only due to its fluid, satisfying gameplay but also the ability to play through the entire story with three friends. Although there were some limitations, it's a game defined largely by its co-op. Now, with Dying Light 2 releasing in the midst of a generational transition, it's only fair to wonder if players can play with their friends across different platforms.
Techland recently debuted the first look at co-op in the highly anticipated sequel. On top of traditional zombie slaying, Dying Light 2's co-op will allow players to vote on critical choices for the game. The world and narrative are heavily impacted by key choices throughout the game, so the host does have the ability to override the other players' votes, but it's nice that there is at least a hint of democracy. The host will have to live with the repercussions of any choices regardless, while the other players will have their own story and world that exists in their own save the file.
Dying Light 2 certainly feels like it was designed with co-op in mind, which makes sense given it was such a prominent part of the first game. Techland has already confirmed Dying Light 2 will be quite long when including all of the additional side content, so players will want to make sure they have a reliable and supportive group of friends to play with if they choose to experience it in co-op. With that said, some players may have a harder time than others making that happen.
Sadly, players will be stuck playing with friends on their specific platform. For some, this may not be a huge issue, but it does limit the pool of players available for co-op. Dying Light 2's co-op will only be playable within their specific console generation and platform family. That means Xbox Series X/S players can't play with PS5 players or Xbox One players. They can only play Dying Light 2 with other Xbox Series X/S owners.
With that said, Dying Light 2 will have five years of post-launch content. Techland could add Dying Light 2 crossplay or cross-gen co-op at a later date, which is something the developer hasn't ruled out yet. As of right now, fans will just have to hold off for the time being. Even though it's a bit disappointing, it's better than having no co-op mode at all.
