Simu Liu Shares BTS Shang-Chi Marvel Casting Details In New Book Preview
Simu Liu shares the first page of his upcoming memoir, which includes the story of the day he first learned he got the lead in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Shang-Chi was the second film in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which hit theaters on September 3, 2021. It introduced MCU fans to Shang-Chi, a kung fu expert who was trained by his father (Tony Leung), the leader of a crime organization called the Ten Rings. His father's obsession with resurrecting the spirit of his late wife threatens the mystical land of Ta Lo, so Shang-Chi must reluctantly become a hero, teaming up with his martial artist sister (Meng'er Zhang) and his best friend (Awkwafina) to stop him. Shang-Chi was a huge box office success for the pandemic era, hitting #2 in the domestic chart for the year.
Although Shang-Chi is the project that made Simu Liu a household name, the actor has been working in the industry since the early 2010s. He alternated between small roles in series like Nikita and Warehouse 13 and stunt performances, including doubling for Pete Wentz in the Fall Out Boy music video "Centuries." His first big break was in the popular Canadian sitcom Kim's Convenience, in which he played the estranged son of a couple who owns a convenience store in Toronto. Kim's Convenience ran for 5 seasons, airing its finale just five months before the premiere of Shang-Chi.
On his Twitter, Simu Liu shared a draft of the first page of his upcoming memoir, which details the day he found out his life was going to change. The call announcing that he had been cast as Shang-Chi, which came from Marvel chief creative officer Kevin Feige himself, reached him as he relaxed at home after a morning of shooting for Kim's Convenience. As Liu describes it, he was "lounging around in my underwear eating a bag of shrimp crackers." Check out the excerpt below:

This excerpt is from Liu's upcoming memoir, which is titled We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story. The book is expected to be published by HarperCollins on May 3, 2022, which means it must be in the late polish stages. This is certainly the fastest turnaround any Marvel star has had between making their MCU debut and releasing a book about their experience.
In fact, this memoir from the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the first performer memoir to specifically center its premise around being involved in a Marvel movie. The publishing world will certainly at some point see books from the likes of the original Avengers, including stars who were plucked from relative obscurity to play heroes like Thor's Chris Hemsworth. However, Liu is clearly hitting the ground running and not taking the opportunity for granted.
