Conte reveals what he liked against Chelsea and points to squad depth

Antonio Conte has revealed that he liked the effort and improvements shown by his Tottenham side against Chelsea this evening, but also hit out at his lack of squad depth.

Spurs took the lead just before half-time but had the goal chalked off as Harry Kane was controversially adjudged to have fouled Thiago Silva in the build-up.

Chelsea then ran away with the encounter in the second 45, scoring twice and keeping a clean sheet against the Lilywhite visitors.

Despite the loss of three points to a major top-four rival, Conte revealed he was pleased with the effort his players showed and even said he was ‘proud’ of them.

However, he also alluded to Chelsea’s incredible squad depth compared to Tottenham’s, claiming the Blues had 22 or 23 players rather than just a team of 11.

With only a week or so left in the January transfer window, Conte will likely be hoping to see his club doing some late business to reinforce his Champions League push.

He said (Football London): “I think that in the three games against Chelsea I think today was for me, for the effort in the game, I liked it maybe and also the second half in the second leg of the Carabao Cup we played a good game.

“We are improving to play against Chelsea but in this moment it’s very difficult to face this type of squad, not team, because they don’t have 11 players, they have 22 or 23 players of an important level.

“The attitude and effort of my players I was pleased with and I’m proud of them.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Even though Spurs deserved to take the lead through that Kane goal, lining up with the XI Conte was able to pick tonight was only likely to end in defeat. He is bang on, Spurs need more depth and better quality players to compete with the likes of Chelsea.
