American Ella Johnson is determined to be with her Chinese boyfriend Johnny on 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days season 5, but some viewers are concerned that Ella won’t be the best stepmother for Johnny's adorable son Stony. Ella met Johnny on a dating website for Asian men to connect with white women since she has a self-proclaimed obsession with all things related to Asian culture. Though Johnny plans to visit Ella for several months since she cannot travel to China due to the pandemic restrictions, viewers don’t think that Ella and Johnny will meet in person this season. Their editing has given several indications that international travel ultimately isn't possible for them at this time. However, some viewers think that is for the best.
Reddit user mie3 voiced their concerns over Ella being Stony's stepmother. "I do not think Ella would be a good stepmom to Stony, a young Asian boy, because of how gross and disturbing her views are of Asian men and Asian culture in general," the user wrote. Many commenters agreed that Ella does not seem equipped to take over the stepmother role to sweet Stony since she lacks cultural understanding and a filter. "Besides her Asian fetish, which is most disturbing, her lack of filter and tendency to discuss her personal hygiene and her bf's *area* are so off-putting and gross," one commenter weighed in. "She doesn’t even know the difference between Chinese, Japanese or Korean culture and would be the last person to raise Stony and teach him his culture," another concerned viewer pointed out.
While Ella doesn't appear to be the most sensitive to cultural differences, other viewers think Ella lacks the maturity to take on a parental role at the moment. Ella comes across as highly emotional and volatile, which causes viewers to question her self-control. "She still thinks with a teenage mind set, and anything that doesn't turn out like she wants is 'emotional trauma to her'," one viewer observed as they said Ella wasn't ready for kids. "Shes about 15 in a 30 something body. This is why Stoney should stay in China," another user wrote. Overall, viewers expressed that Johnny needs to ensure he is putting Stony's needs first and thinking of his son above all else.
