Google Pixel 6 Series January Update Fixes These Glitches, Plus December’s
Google has begun rolling out a new software update to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro after a failed attempt to update the two phones in December. The Pixel 6 series has gotten a lot of attention since its launch in Oct. 2021. However, while the two phones have been praised for their design, better cameras, and software features, there have also been some complaints too.
The Pixel Drop update released in the first week of Dec. 2021 packed several improvements such as Quick Tap to Snap and the ability to use the phones as digital car keys. There were also tons of bug fixes. However, the update had to be paused when users reported multiple issues, including connectivity ones that dropped calls.
The new update was released a few days ago and has begun rolling out to Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners. Google has stated on its support page that the time the update hits users will vary depending on the carrier and country. The changelog mentions that the update not only brings new bug fixes and the January security patch but also comes with all of the fixes that should have arrived with the Dec. 2021 update. That update was supposed to have fixes for several issues, including but not limited to Bluetooth audio distortions, the performance of the fingerprint sensor, image quality, freezing apps and the Google Assistant initiating a phone call on its own. Unfortunately, the experience was so bad that Google had to halt the update and also disable certain features.
Call Screening and Hold For Me are two features available on the Pixel phones, including the Pixel 6 Pro. Unfortunately, Google had to disable the two due to a bug in the December update. However, those who have received the new update have reported the two features are now back and working on the two phones. Call Screen is a feature that allows the Google Assistant to answer a call and find out who is calling and why. Hold For Me also uses Google Assistant to wait on hold on a call until a support representative is available to speak to the user.
Those who have received the update are reporting two different sizes — for some, the update comes in at over 200MB, while others have reported an update size of about 41MB. The reason for the disparity in the size is that those who are getting the more extensive update are those who didn't receive the problematic December update before Google suspended it, while the minor update is for those who got the December update.
