A crazy piece of fan art sees Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool crossover with Jim Carrey’s The Mask. Following the less-than-faithful take on Wade Wilson/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Reynolds’ debuted his definitive Deadpool in 2016. The Merc with a Mouth’s profanity, outlandish violence, and meta-humor fit Reynolds like a glove and helped Deadpool gross $783 million at the global box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing R-rated films ever. 2018’s Deadpool 2 was an even bigger success, cementing the mutant as one of the cinema’s most popular comic book characters.
Alongside Ace Venture: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber, 1994’s The Mask—which grossed over $351 million at the global box office—helped to make Carrey a certified A-lister. The PG-13 comedy followed bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss, who discovers a mysterious mask that turns its wearer into a green-faced exaggerated version of themselves with cartoonish, and seemingly boundless superpowers. While a live-action sequel, The Son of the Mask, was released in 2005, it did not succeed without the talents of Carrey.
Digital artist Hasan Kazi recently shared some art on Instagram imagining a crossover between Deadpool and The Mask. The piece captioned “let’s do something crazy this year,” sees Wilson prepare to put on Ipkiss’ Mask. Check it out below:

The Mask is inspired by the Dark Horse comic book series of the same name. Like the film, the source material sees the mask’s wearers granted reality-altering powers, a large green head, and big teeth. However, in the comics, Stanley Ipkiss and company don the mask and become cruel and murderous regardless of their initial intentions. More often than not, these characters turn into villains. In this sense, the character was inspired by DC’s Joker and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. That being said, the live-action film toned its Mask, making it only as dangerous as its bearer.
Suffice to say, the Mask would be pretty dangerous in the hands of Wade Wilson. Having regenerative powers and being a Skilled marksman, swordsman, and martial artist, Deadpool is already dangerous—throw reality-altering abilities into the mix, and Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) is in for a very frustrating third film. It would seem that Carrey has no intention of ever returning for a sequel to The Mask. However, now that Deadpool has officially made his quasi-MCU debut, Deadpool 3 is in the works at Marvel Studios. That being said, the well of pop culture references/crossover opportunities are endless and, while he doesn't wear a green mask, his irreverence is seemingly boundless.
