Man dies after being hit by a tram in Manchester
A man has died after being hit by a tram in Manchester city centre.
Emergency services raced to Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink station just after 11pm on Sunday but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim’s age is not known but he is understood to have been an adult man.
An investigation has been launched as officers appeal for witnesses to come forward.
Sergeant Matthew Waggett said: ‘This was a tragic incident and enquiries are ongoing to establish what happened in the moments leading up to the collision, and to fully understand how this collision occurred.
‘We would ask anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have been on the Metrolink platforms at Deansgate-Castlefield in the moments leading up to the incident to please get in touch with police as soon as possible.’

Danny Vaughan, head of Manchester’s Metrolink, said: ‘This is an extremely upsetting incident and my thoughts and deepest sympathies are with this person’s family and friends.
‘This matter has been referred to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) and is currently subject of a police investigation and it goes without saying that we will do whatever we can to support them.’
