Writer-producer duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have shared that they were able to explore whatever Spider-Man universes they wanted when it came to making Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part 1). The highly anticipated follow up to 2018's Academy award winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has officially received its first trailer, and Spidey-fans are already gearing up for its theatrical release later next year. The sequel will see Shameik Moore return as the voice of Miles Morales, with Hailee Steinfeld set to reprise her Spider-Gwen role.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse became an instant success for a number reasons, such as its unique animation style and its focus on the story of Morales, especially after many had been calling for an adaptation of this beloved character's Spider-Man story for years. Alongside Morales, Into the Spider-Verse also brought a number of other interesting Spider-Man iterations into the mix, including Spider-Man Noir (Nicholas Cage), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) and Spider-Ham (John Mulaney). The end credit scene for the film even teased Oscar Isaac's "Interesting Person #1" who was confirmed to be Spider-Man 2099, and has since appeared in the new trailer for the animated follow-up, going toe-to-toe with Morales for a currently unknown reason. Now, it seems as though the appearance of these characters came with almost no restraints whatsoever.
During an Q&A with EW, the writers behind both Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its upcoming sequel, Lord and Miller, revealed that they were able to do almost anything they wanted when it came to building the Spider-Verse. The Q&A was shared in a series of tweets by EW, and when asked if there were any alternate universes or characters that the duo had wanted to explore within the films that had ultimately not made the final cut, the pair confirmed that this was not the case. The writers responded: "Honestly? No. We’re getting to do more or less everything we have ever wanted."
Takuya Yamashiro, the Spider-Man from the 1978 TV series, and Spider-Woman/Jessica Drew, are just two of the exciting new characters that have already been confirmed to be make an appearance in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Part 2), but with this interesting confirmation from Lord and Miller, it now remains to be seen just how many Spider-Man variants could pop up within the film. The duo also revealed that they had already seen the MCU's upcoming live-action Spider-Man feature, Spider-Man: No Way Home, after the rumors surrounding its release had many questioning if Morales could make a surprise cameo within the multiversal craziness that the film is set to unleash.
The new Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer gave away very little with regards to what audiences can expect from the sequel, but the short look at Isaac's newest Spider-Man variant has certainly sparked conversation over who else could appear within Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Part 2). A device worn by Spider-Man 2099 in the trailer has hinted that Morales could visit the universe of Spider-Man: India's Pavitr Prabhakar at some point within the film, since it appeared to show that the pair were travelling through Earth-50101. For now, audiences still have a while to go until they learn what exactly from the vast array of Spider-Man possibilities Lord and Miller have in store for Miles Morales in the newest installment of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
