Report: Experienced Spurs star considered joining Roma in the summer
The Athletic have revealed that Hugo Lloris considered leaving Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with AS Roma being a possible destination.
Lloris’ current contract at Tottenham runs out this summer and there has been speculation over recent weeks suggesting that the Lilywhites are on the lookout for the Frenchman’s long-term number one replacement.
However, The Athletic have now revealed that there is a ‘quiet confidence’ that the club will be able to agree on a new deal with the Tottenham captain.
It is explained that discussions have been ongoing between the 34-year-old’s representatives and the club and that it is expected to intensify over the ‘coming weeks’
While Tottenham reportedly did not see Lloris’ contract situation as a priority to address until now, things are said to have changed, especially since the goalkeeper would be free to talk to other clubs from January.
It is explained that the former Lyon man considered leaving North London in the summer as he felt there was too much reliance on him and Harry Kane to provide leadership and direction in the dressing room.
However, there is now thought to be a willingness on both sides for an extension to be agreed upon.
While Lloris is said to be keen on playing for his hometown club, Nice, before hanging up his boots, that is not thought to be an immediate goal for the French number one.

Given the form Lloris has been in over the last two years, the club was always going to offer him a new contract.
The former Lyon man has been an extremely loyal servant to Spurs over the years and there is no reason to think that he would reject any contract offer.
The only potential concern might have been the length of the contract, with the Frenchman potentially feeling that he could get a two or three-year deal elsewhere.
However, a one-year contract might suit him as that would potentially allow him the chance to return to Nice as a free agent when he desires.
