Jay & Silent Bob Reunite to Wish Fans a Merry Christmas
Clerks 3 stars Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith become Jay and Silent Bob one more time to wish their fans a Merry Christmas. Mewes and Smith made their debut as their famous stoner characters way back in Smith’s first feature film Clerks in 1994.
Jay and Silent Bob indeed proved popular enough in Clerks that Smith would continue bringing them back in the coming years, featuring them in his films Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma. The stoner duo then received their own showcase film as Smith starred them in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, a satire on the Hollywood movie scene. Of course the characters later returned for the sequel Clerks II in 2006. They then came back again in 2019 for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, another send-up of moviemaking (and specifically Hollywood’s love of reboots). And of course with Smith making Clerks III, his most popular recurring characters will be back for one more appearance.
Before Clerks III releases to the world, Mewes and Smith have brought out Jay and Silent Bob for one more special appearance via Smith’s Instagram account. Of course the Christmas message of the post has a slight capitalistic motive as Smith invites fans to purchase Mooby's gear featured in the image, including a Mooby's ugly sweater and a Mooby's hockey jersey. The children’s TV character Mooby of course is himself a recurring character in Smith’s filmography, having featured heavily in the religious satire of Dogma and especially in Clerks II, where the characters of Randal and Dante are forced to go to work at a Mooby’s fast food restaurant after the Quick Stop convenience store burns down. Clerks III will no doubt give Smith yet another chance to bring out the Mooby character and score some points at the expense of consumerism (while making a few dollars selling merch featuring the character that exists to make fun of consumerism).
It remains to be seen what new hijinks Jay and Silent Bob will get up to when they return for one more feature film appearance in Clerks III. It’s certain however that the characters will sport their classic look, as Smith even dug out the hoodie he first wore as Silent Bob way back in 1994. Story-wise, Clerks 3 will have a decided meta-movie angle as it sees Randal and Dante making a film about their time at the Quick Stop convenience store. No doubt Smith finds himself in a reflective mood this time around after his own health problems, hence his desire to revisit the Quick Stop and explore his own movie legacy.
