‘Could be bad news for Kane’ – Journalist on Lionel Messi’s Barcelona departure
Barcelona have confirmed this evening that Lionel Messi will not remain at the club next season.
The Argentine was due to sign a new contract this week having verbally agreed on a new five-year deal that will would have seen his salary cut by 50 per cent, courtesy of a new injection of cash into La Liga from CVC investments (Sky Sports).
The Catalan giants have claimed that ‘financial and structural obstacles’ have put pay to the deal, despite both the club and player having reached an agreement.
The Evening Standard’s chief football correspondent Dan Kilpatrick has claimed that news of Messi’s departure could be bad news for Harry Kane, should Manchester City look to target the Argentine.
Kane is said to be determined to make the move to the Premier League champions, having reportedly told a non-English Manchester City player before Monday’s no-show at training (The Athletic).
City were reportedly keen to sign the Argentine playmaker last summer, having proritised their interest in the Barcelona ace over a bid for Kane.
