Opinion: Five things we learned from Tottenham’s draw against Chelsea
Tottenham Hotspur started their Mind Series campaign with a 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge yesterday evening, albeit a very sloppy first-half performance from the Lilywhites.
Fortunately, they improved somewhat in the second 45, so let’s take a look at five things we learned:
Off the pace – If one thing became clear last night, it’s that Spurs look off the pace as a squad when compared to Chelsea. In terms of off the ball running, creativity, and passing, Spurs were so far short. It could be a case of Nuno getting time to instil his own style and, of course, fitness.
Tanganga needs a loan – I love Tanganga and think he has great promise, however, I think he needs a full season out on loan. He reminds me a little of Skipp before last season. He needs to have that experience of being a senior star for a full campaign. I would prefer that to be either at a low Premier League side or title challenger in the Championship, although it appears that won’t be the case.
New frustrations for Son – I’m sure that Son has endured much frustration in a Spurs shirt in recent years, but it’s a new role for him this season. He now looks to be the main man up front leading the line, meaning he is relying on Tottenham controlling the game and making him chances. All of that without Kane too. Spurs need to play to Son’s strengths.
Gollini debut – One silver lining was getting to see Pierluigi Gollini for the first time. He had a few simple saves to make and seemed very confident with the ball at his feet. I’m sure there will be much more insightful tests to come, but good for him to get a run-out against a top Premier League side.
Moura the bright spark – Heading into the new season, Moura is definitely the bright spark for Spurs. He has been the one consistent source of goals, assists, and created chances throughout pre-season. He had an off day yesterday but still managed to deflect in a goal and create a second for Bergwijn by turning over possession. An important figure for Nuno in the early weeks, I think.
