Child dies after being hit by car at the start of school holidays
A child has died after being hit by a car on Teesside.
The youngster was rushed to hospital after the collision on a quiet cul-de-sac in Stockton on Friday afternoon.
A huge number of emergency crews, including an air ambulance attended the scene and an area around a home in Wellbrook Close was sealed off.
The child was taken to Middlesbrough’s James Cook Hospital in a critical condition, but Cleveland Police today confirmed they later died of their injuries.
A spokesperson said: ‘Police can confirm that a child has sadly died following a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a child on Wellbrook Close in Ingleby Barwick at 12.55pm on Friday, July 23.
‘Ambulance service colleagues attended the scene and the child was taken to hospital.
‘Our thoughts remain with the family of the child at this extremely distressing time and they are being supported by officers.
‘Enquiries are ongoing in relation to the collision.’
The tragedy happened as schools across the country break up for the summer holidays.
Locals said the community has been left in shock at the child’s death.
One resident added: ‘I went to help but there were lots of people, so I backed off as I felt like an intruder.
‘That poor family.’
