‘He’d absolutely want that’ – Pundit backs Lingard to choose Tottenham over rivals
Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has tipped Tottenham to pip rivals West Ham to the signing of Jesse Lingard from Manchester United this summer.
Football Insider also reported this week that West Ham fear that Tottenham could potentially blow them out of the water in the race for Jesse Lingard’s signature.
The Irons are said to be keen to convert the Man United star’s 2020-21 loan into a permanent deal this summer.
Lingard was very impressive in the Premier League for West Ham as he scored nine goals and grabbed five assists and was a big catalyst for West Ham’s impressive season in which David Moyes’ side achieved Europa League football.
Lingard has also been linked with Spurs as, reportedly, he is wanted by new manager Nuno Espirito Santo as one of two players in a potential £100 million cash-plus-players deal with Man United for England captain Harry Kane.
Whelan said: “I think in terms of European football, of course.
“But then you’ve got to look at the bigger picture. Tottenham are rebuilding. He will understand there will be a process there that is not going to change overnight. It might take a season.
“When you look at everything that’s Tottenham have got to offer in terms of stadium, history, players that are already there he could be playing with, he’d absolutely want that.
“You want to play with Son, you want to play with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. You want to play with top-class players and be a successful side. Now they could be successful, but not straight away.
“This is a process and a process probably over two to three years I can imagine. If you get the right players in they could end up turning their fortunes around.
“They could be a team that is more competitive again against Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United.”

Six months ago, a race for Lingard’s signature would have been between lower-league Premier League clubs but the attacking midfielder looked rejuvenated for West Ham.
It would now be a coup for Tottenham to get Lingard in, but one that would be turned away if it’s used to soften down Kane’s price tag.
