The 34-year-old has thrown live batting practices to Mets hitters over the last week-and-a-half. He may be able to throw two or three innings in his first rehab start, manager Luis Rojas said. Rojas suggested Carrasco could return to the team without stretching to six or so innings. The Mets’ rotation is missing a fifth starter after injuries to Joey Lucchesi, David Peterson, and Thomas Szapucki. The team hasn’t shown much confidence in Jerad Eickhoff as a fifth starter, either.
The Mets have shown they’ll be cautious with their rehabbing players this season. No one will be rushed back. They need to hit a series of benchmarks the front office and medical team layout for a player.
The Mets acquired Carrasco alongside Francisco Lindor in January. He’s signed for the rest of this season as well as the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He has a career 3.77 ERA and 88-73 record over 11 seasons with Cleveland before coming to the Mets. His return, and subsequent success, would boost the ability of this year’s team, and the next two years.
