Below Deck: Show Receives First-Ever Emmy Nomination
The most-watched Bravo series in the past year, Below Deck, received its first-ever Emmy nomination earlier this week. The show follows a crew of eight who work and live aboard a superyacht during a charter season. Since the series first aired in 2013 with the original concept, the franchise has branched off into two spin-offs: Below Deck Mediterranean and Below Deck Sailing Yacht. However, Bravo isn't stopping there as they have two more spin-offs in the works that will premiere within the next year.
Season five of Below Deck Med hit quite the record last year as it beat out The Real Housewives of Atlanta as the most-watched Bravo series of 2020. Over the years, the viewers have enjoyed the drama between the crew, the boatmances, and the out-of-control charter guests. With two more spin-offs in the works, Bravo fans will soon have their whole year filled with new Below Deck content.
On Tuesday, Variety confirmed that Below Deck scored its first-ever nominations from the Television Academy. The nomination will be the first show besides Top Chef on Bravo to receive an Emmy nomination. Top Chef has been a continuing nominee in the reality-competition categories, as well as a two-time winner. However, this year, the fan-loved boat series is now getting the attention it deserves. Season eight of the original series, which aired from November through February, was nominated for an unstructured reality program and for picture editing for an unstructured reality program. Captain Lee, who has been a part of the series since the beginning, said in a statement, "Being part of ‘Below Deck’ since the beginning has been a wild ride that has been filled with many surprises."
He continued, "Finding out today that we received two Emmy nominations is the most exciting surprise yet. I’m extremely humbled to be a small part of the talented team that actually makes this show what it is and I’m so very proud of everyone." The Bravo series will be competing against other heavy-hitters in the reality TV world in the unstructured reality category, such as, Becoming on Disney Plus, Indian Matchmaking and Selling Sunset, which are both on Netflix, and RuPaul’s Drag Race Untucked from VH1. Izzy Wouters, who appeared on season eight of the series, shared an Instagram story congratulating the team that worked on the most recent season. Even Below Deck Med's Malia White shared her excitement for the nomination by sharing the Below Deck official announcement from their Instagram page.
Below Deck has quickly become a must-watch series on the Bravo network. The audience has gravitated toward the show because it offers one thing everyone can relate to, workplace drama. With the added appeal of romance onboard and the beautiful islands they get to visit, it is no wonder they finally received the Emmy nomination they deserve.
