Marble Arch’s 25-metre mound is nearly ready for Londoners to climb up
Photographs show how work is progressing fast on the manmade ‘hill’ in central London which will form a viewing platform.
The Marble Arch Mound is set to open on July 26, and from then you’ll have until early January 2022 to visit before it is dismantled.
Tickets for the 25-metre structure will start from £4.50 with family and resident discounts available.
Once finished, people will be able to climb up for views of Oxford Street, Hyde Park, and Marble Arch itself.
To leave the mound, tourists will climb down via a different route, this time going inside it into a hollowed-out area with a café, shop and exhibition space.
The mound, commissioned by Westminster City Council, was designed to be made of reusable material as it is only a temporary structure.
According to the architect’s proposal: ‘The exit from the Hall is located in a notch in the corner of the hill that ensures the temporary structure is offset from Marble Arch.
‘In this way, visitors are confronted with multiple views on the arch, giving them a new perspective on an object they might otherwise take for granted.’
MVRDV architects founding partner, Winy Maas, said: ‘This project is a wonderful opportunity to give an impulse to a highly recognisable location in London.
‘It’s a location full of contradictions, and our design highlights that. By adding this landscape element, we make a comment on the urban layout of the Marble Arch, and by looking to the site’s history, we make a comment on the area’s future.’
