James Gunn Reveals His Favorite Peacemaker Cast Member
James Gunn celebrates production wrapping on Peacemaker season 1 with the reveal of his favorite cast member: an adorable dog named Penny. Gunn began writing the HBO Max series while stuck in lockdown from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic for fun. DC Films expressed interest in having him develop it further and swiftly picked up the project. The series will star John Cena as the titular vigilante and explore his origins in the DC Extended Universe.
Cena and Gunn are currently gearing up to make their DCEU debuts with the forthcoming The Suicide Squad, the standalone follow-up to David Ayer's 2016 team-up film. Gunn signed on to the project within a few days after Marvel Studios dismissed him from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, though Marvel quickly reversed course after his jump to DC. Despite being given a break between both productions, the acclaimed filmmaker elected to work through it to write and shoot Peacemaker and as quickly as he got it started, he's already wrapped things up.

The turnaround time Gunn and his crew achieved with Peacemaker has been a feat to marvel at, especially given that it marks his first proper foray into television in his 30-plus-year career. Though he's assembled a supremely talented cast for the HBO Max series, Gunn naming Penny as his favorite cast member shouldn't come as a surprise. Last year brought the sad news from Gunn that his beloved dog, Dr. Wesley Von Spears, had passed away. He had to depart from the Panama location of The Suicide Squad's production to be with his companion at the end.
Seeing Gunn connect with the adorable Penny on Peacemaker is a sweet treat for fans, but now the curiosity shifts to how the dog fits into the narrative of the HBO Max series. Given the larger stature and personality of Cena's character, it would be a funny and ironic twist for Peacemaker to have such a small animal companion. Hopefully, audiences will get to see Cena interact with Penny when the series arrives in January.
