Shaw is sticking two fingers up at everyone who doubted him

Jason Dodd coached Luke Shaw in Southampton’s academy and previously claimed that the player needed encouragement to get the best out of him, during the period when Jose Mourinho was repeatedly criticising the left-back in the media.

Shaw has been one of the players of Euro 2020 so far, assisting three goals in the tournament, and Dodd is delighted to see a former player of his answering his critics.

It’s brilliant, they [Shaw and Raheem Sterling] haven’t had too long playing together in the England setup. And it’s not as if we’ve got one threat either, you’ve got Walker on the right who loves to bomb on. We’ve got threats all over the park, I’m loving it.

At the latter stages of United under Mourinho was the first time his dad sort of pointed the finger, because he’d had a steady rise until then. The last 18 months he’s stuck two fingers up to everyone and said ‘look, I’m a bloody good player and these are the reasons why.’

In 2014, Southampton made the shock decision to sack Dodd, who had also coached James Ward-Prowse and Calum Chambers in the academy. Shaw took to Twitter to reveal how “gutted” he was that someone who had been so key in development had been dismissed.
