Snake Eyes Trailer Makes Fun Of Old GI Joe PSAs | Screen Rant

A new trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins hilariously spoofs the classic G.I. Joe cartoon’s famous PSA segments. The new movie, which will act as a soft reboot of the G.I. Joe live-action film franchise, stars Henry Golding as the eponymous ninja, alongside a supporting cast that includes Andrew Koji, Úrsula Corberó, Samara Weaving, and Iko Uwais. Snake Eyes is scheduled to release in theaters on July 23, 2021.

Even just in the trailer footage unveiled so far, Snake Eyes already looks like it’s making some significant changes to G.I. Joe lore. The biggest of those changes involve Snake Eyes himself, who historically has kept his face hidden and refrained from speaking. Golding’s take on the Snake Eyes character will be a good deal different, as will many elements of his origin story. Still, it looks like the new film is keeping a lot of the core G.I. Joe story intact, such as the nature of Cobra, and other classic characters like Storm Shadow, Scarlett, and Baroness.

In a new comedic trailer from Paramount Pictures, Snake Eyes pays particular homage to the early days of modern G.I. Joe. The stop-motion-style video shows a number of classic action figures offering safety advice to three young kids, much like the iconic PSA segments of the old G.I. Joe cartoon. Eventually, the children come across Golding’s Snake Eyes, who explains the basics of the new movie while fighting off some retro Cobra assailants. It’s a funny reference back to the franchise’s roots, which any viewer of the original show should appreciate. Check out the new Snake Eyes trailer below.

Blending old and new is always a challenge when bringing back a classic franchise like G.I. Joe. So far, Snake Eyes looks like it’s towing that line pretty well, but it’s impossible to say for sure before the full movie releases. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation included a lot of winks and nods to the old days of the series, but those films both fell short in other ways, earning some severe critical condemnations.

It’s no secret that Snake Eyes, if successful, could spawn a new G.I. Joe film series. That means that some of the other characters in the cartoon trailer, like Roadblock and Lady Jaye, could show up in future live-action installments. For now, Paramount is keeping things a bit smaller scale, with just a handful of classic characters. With luck, that will mean a tight and focused story for Snake Eyes, setting the future of the franchise up for success.
