Just a few months before Google is expected to announce the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, specs for both phones have leaked online. Between massive camera upgrades, more RAM, and a huge commitment to software updates, it sounds like this year's Pixels are shaping up to be something special.
Pixel 6 rumors have been circulating for almost all of 2021, and even before this latest leak, it was already looking really promising. Google's expected to launch two models (Pixe 6 and 6 Pro), both phones will be powered by the first-ever Google silicon, and they'll feature radical new designs compared to past releases. According to the latest design leaks, the Pixel 6 handsets will feature a multi-tone backside, horizontal camera bumps, and in-screen fingerprint sensors.
To go along with the all-new processor and aesthetics, Front Page Tech has now pulled the curtain back on key specifications for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Starting with the baseline Pixel 6, it's reported to have a 6.4-inch AMOLED display, 50MP primary camera, 12MP ultra-wide camera, 8MP selfie camera, and a 4,614 mAh battery. It'll have the same 8GB of RAM as the Pixel 5, though there will now be two storage options of 128 or 256GB.
The Pixel 6 Pro is similar to the Pixel 6 in some ways, but thanks to the 'Pro' label, it also comes with numerous upgrades over its cheaper sibling. Front Page Tech claims the Pixel 6 Pro will come equipped with a 6.71-inch OLED display, 50MP primary camera, 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 48MP telephoto camera. The battery is rated at 5,000 mAh, RAM is upgraded to 12GB, and there are three available storage options — 128, 256, and 512GB. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro also share a few smaller specs, including 5G support and Wi-Fi 6E.
Something else that'll apparently be found on Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro is "at least 5 years of software updates." For some context, Google currently offers 3 years of major OS updates for its Pixel handsets. While that's better than many other Android manufacturers, there's been a desire for Google to do even better on this front. Not only would 5 years of updates push the Pixel 6 series far ahead of any other Android phones in this regard, but it would also put Google on a level playing field with Apple and iOS updates.
Google is expected to announce the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro at some point in October 2021. Assuming all of the above specs are accurate, they're bound to be two of the year's best Android handsets — hands down. Google's completely overhauling its design language, the possibilities of a Google-made processor remain immensely exciting, and it sounds like Google is finally ditching the 12.2MP rear camera it's been using on Pixel phones since the Pixel 3. Add all of that together with 5 years of updates, and it's hard to see these phones failing. Let's just hope this all isn't too good to be true.
