The character designs and overall animation lean more towards live-action, and the series is more like an action blockbuster movie divided into four 25-minute parts than a regular anime show. With a unique format and an intriguing story, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness opens the door for a second season — but will it really happen?
It's too soon to confirm whether Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness season 2 is guaranteed, or if there will be a sequel movie or any type of continuation. Considering the popularity of the franchise and the success of Resident Evil Village, it's not too far-fetched to believe that a new title will arrive sooner rather than later in the form of another CG anime series like Infinite Darkness, a new CG anime movie like Resident Evil: Vendetta, or perhaps a series in the style of traditional 2D anime. According to Anime News Network, TOKYOPOP will release an accompanying adaptation of Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness in the form of a manga graphic novel, but how much new material it will add remains to be seen.
Taking into account the wide variety of formats the Resident Evil franchise encompasses, it's hard to pinpoint which new title Capcom is planning next. If Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness season 2 is greenlit and begins production as soon as possible, it could arrive on Netflix in late 2022 or early 2023. However, it's likely that the live-action movie Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and the live-action Resident Evil TV series will push back the next RE CG anime a couple of years.
Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness reveals that Secretary Wilson was the mastermind behind the attack on the White House. He intended to create an international conflict fueled by biological warfare in order to profit from the cure to the virus. Infinite Darkness concludes with the now-infected Wilson receiving the cure himself, but instead of the infamous Umbrella Corporation, it's Tricell that manufactured it. This is a reference to Infinite Darkness's place in the Resident Evil timeline; more specifically, between Leon Kennedy's mission in Resident Evil 4's and Tricell's twisted weaponization of the Uroboros virus in Resident Evil 5.
The ending of Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness could be a nod to the fans who played Resident Evil 5 and know Tricell is doomed, or it could be a tease of a new storyline set before or during the events of the game. Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness season 2 could follow Secretary Wilson, Tricell, or even Umbrella furthering their evil plans in secret, despite the fact that Tricell is thought to be bound to go under soon.
