Man dies after e-scooter crash as girlfriend pictured holding his hand
A 20-year-old man has died in hospital six days after colliding with a car while riding an e-scooter with his girlfriend, leaving her ‘devastated’.
Shakur Pinnock was left comatose after suffering fractured skull, two severed arteries, a broken jaw and punctured lungs after the crash in Wolverhampton last weekend.
He was airlifted to hospital where his girlfriend Chanté Hoosang, 19, has been recovering from her injuries in a stable condition.
She was pictured holding his hand as he lay unconscious on Tuesday, with hospital staff having moved her bed next to his temporarily.
He succumbed to his injuries on Friday afternoon.
Chanté’s aunt, Emma Murphy, said on Sunday the 19-year-old has undergone two rounds of surgery and must grieve in hospital as she waits for further operations.
She told BirminghamLive: ‘Losing her soulmate has been totally devastating. She is likely to have to remain in hospital for many weeks.
‘Shak was the only person that was able to bring the biggest smile to my niece’s face, she just beamed when he was around.
‘He made her laugh in a way nobody else could, with him she was truly happy and for this I will be eternally grateful to Shak.’
Shakur’s mum, Celine Fraser-Pinnock, paid tribute to her son on Saturday, writing in a Facebook post: ‘I miss you so much. My beautiful, gorgeous baby.’
In an interview with ITV last week, she said medical staff had discussed turning off Shakur’s life support as they had done ‘all they could do’ but begged them to keep it on to give him ‘a bit more time to heal’.
Chanté’s aunt has opened a JustGiving page to raise funds to cover the costs of Shakur’s memorial and support both families affected.
Chanté is said to be desperate to have her iPhone, which was damaged in the crash, repaired as it contains ‘precious memories of her and Shak’s years together’.
Any remaining funds will be used to help the young woman with her rehabilitation, the family added.
West Midlands Police are urging anyone who might have information or dashcam footage showing the crash to contact them via their website or by calling 101 and quoting log 2690 of June 12.
